Rowing in the Desert!
Rowing in the desert!
It’s been an amazing year for Tempe Junior Crew and Coach Dan Duxbury. TJC rowers qualified for and competed at the US Youth National Championships in Cincinnati and the World Championship Trials in Princeton. One rower, Erin Crawford, qualified and competed in the World Junior Championships in Beijing, China placing an impressive 16th in the world. Coach Dan went as the women’s double coach for the US Team.
Rowing is one of the oldest and most challenging sports there is. It requires tremendous muscular strength and endurance and utilizes every major muscle group in the body. There are 2 disciplines in rowing – sculling and sweep rowing. Scullers are athletes with 2 oars – 1 in each hand, and they compete in single, double and quad boats. Sweepers row with only 1 oar and compete in pairs, fours and eights, with eights being the fastest boats on the water.
This fall TJC will compete in regattas all over the United States including: Head of the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma, Head of the Charles River in Boston, Head of the Skuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, our own Hot Head Regatta at Tempe Town Lake, Head of the Marina Regatta in Marina del Ray, and the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival in Newport Beach, CA. The spring season follows with more local regattas, as well as regattas in California and British Columbia.
In addition to high school age athletes, there are Masters Rowing Programs as well. Rowing is an exciting and challenging sport with dedicated athletes, and Tempe Town Lake is a beautiful venue.
Come check out these beautiful boats gliding across the lake!

Congratulations to the TJC and Erin Crawford. I've always enjoyed watching the boats glide across still water. I can only imagine the endurance required.
